Time To Lead #1 | It's an execution problem

Hello Reader!

So here we go. After a few too many "Hey Anna, tell me again, what is it actually that you all do?", I realized that it wouldn't hurt to start sending around a regular update not just on what I've been up to, but also about things I figured out and with small nuggets and insights that I've found valuable.

A newsletter then? If it needs a label, go ahead and call it that. But most of all, I felt I wanted to get closer in touch with you. When I think of social media, it feels like we all stand on top of our buildings shouting around what we're up to, holding up banners showcasing our success, and convincing people to climb onto our roof, but barely able to fully hear and understand each other.

When it comes to real growth as an individual, as leaders in our career, I value the more intimate, personal stuff.

So that's what I'll try to do with an email like this. Share in all openness what I have going on, and hopefully that triggers a conversation between you and me. It's really just me, Anna. I'm right on the other side of this email.

So, let's do this yes, it's about time to lead.

INSIDE LEADERSHIP

What I'm working on, thinking about, and talking about with leaders around me.

BEYOND THE BARGAIN

On Wednesday last week I ran a breakfast session on Negotiation with a group of women from the Terra Goddesses community, who lead the charge in addressing climate change and championing women's causes.

In our session we spoke about how negotiation is as much dynamics as it is mechanics. What do BATNAs and ZOPAs look like in a globalized world and what to watch out for when you're negotiating for a better world, rather than for profit.

We also practiced how fairness and irrationality influence the deals we make. And then I shared my tips and tricks about why we shouldn't go for a 'Yes', the power of listening and asking for the 'Anna' discount.

SETTING EXPECTATIONS WITH SENIOR LEADERS

In a coffee chat with a Head of Product I work with, we spoke about the importance of setting clear expectations upfront, and to align on what success will look like, before we start working together.

It's becoming more and more clear to me that the reason so many leaders struggle with giving feedback is because we never started with clarity on expectations, so we have nothing we can really refer back to.

It's like going to a restaurant and saying: "make me anything, I'm hungry", and then only to see the chef come with a dish you really don't feel like eating. You can't really say anything, because you didn't say upfront that this wasn't what you liked.

A good trick with setting expectations is to ask, rather than tell. I can tell you that I need you to do this, but the real commitment comes when people have self-proposed to do something. So, ask: "What can I reasonably expect from you by then and then?". Humans have an inner need to be consistent with their earlier commitments, so this is a powerful way to tap into that. Then all you have to do is hold them to their own commitments.

LEAD BY NUMBERS

A data point that caught my attention - curious to hear your take.

of employees don't want a promotion

For many, career development isn't about that promotion. I was surprised to find out that 2 out of 5 employees are not interested in a promotion. They are happy where they are. Growth to them is defined differently than climbing the career ladder.

In the career sessions I've led in the past few months, we've gone deeper into this: What are other ways to grow, aside from getting a promotion. I wrote more about that in my blog on Substack (the first one!), read it here.

QUOTED WISDOM

Words that shifted my perspective and thoughts worth keeping close.

Learning is deeper and more durable when it's effortful. Learning that's easy is like writing in sand, here today and gone tomorrow.
Peter C. Brown - Make it Stick

Lately, I've been reflecting on how I facilitate learning programs, something I try to do regularly, because we can always do better. I came across the book Make it Stick by Peter C. Brown et al and it is a good reminder how humans learn new skills. Some of the things addressed in the book are ideas I had picked up along the way in the past few years, but they slip away, thanks to the 'forgetting curve'.

As I'm reading the book, I realize it's time to step up as a facilitator: Moving aside some of the friendly, non-committal 'oh this is optional' and 'it would be great if you could...' and bring in more of the 'this is important to do, so make sure you get it done'.

If you have me running your program coming up, let this be your heads up: I'm going to be stricter. And I'll bring in 'desirable difficulty', as the struggle and effort will make the learning stick. You'll see me experiment more, reduce theory and increase practice in new ways. Goodbye easy learning, hello effortful difficult learning. Do give me feedback, that's how I get better. Together we figure this out.

LEAD WITHIN

Questions I ask myself, reflect on, and sit with to keep growing as a leader.

In a conversation with my coach, the topic of 'scarcity mindset' came up. Scarcity mindset is the often subconscious belief that resources are limited: limited time, limited clients, limited everything. She made me realize that, without noticing, I had been thinking about success as a competition - rushing to do more, fearing I'd never catch up, struggling to stand out or be unique.

But here's the big insight: the opposite of scarcity isn't abundance - it's enoughness.

Abundance is a powerful mindset - the belief that there is always more: more chances, more wins, more success to go around. But it can also be exhausting and overwhelming.

Enoughness is different. Enoughness means you're already on the right path. What you have, what you know, and what you offer is enough to create impact.

It doesn't mean settling. It doesn't mean giving up. It means trusting that there's space for you. Your unique experiences, insights and approach are enough to make a difference. Growth, expansion and evolution still happen - but from a place of curiosity, not competition, fear or perfection.

Where in your leadership or career are you operating from a place of scarcity? What would you change if you embraced "enoughness" instead?

SUPERCHARGE

A tool, habit or trick I picked up that's been making things easier for me.

Last year, I started running masterclasses on using GenAI as a thought partner. In just nine months, over 3,500 people have joined. These sessions came from a deeply personal experience: as a solopreneur, I quickly realized that GenAI became my on-demand, pseudo-colleague, helping me think, structure and move forward. That still holds today - more than ever.

Last week, when I felt stuck in my business, I turned to GenAI for advise. I decided to drop the filter and be fully honest about my challenges. I poured out my thoughts, worries and frustrations - not just looking for quick solutions, but actually using it to push me. Don't stop at the nicely written advise, push back, challenge it, throw in why it won't work, and repeat.

After a few rounds, it had enough context about me and my situation that it threw this to me: "What you're facing is an execution problem".

I stared out of the window to let it sink in. It was true. My issue wasn't the ideas or lack of capability. It's getting things done and getting them done effectively.

So try this for yourself. Next time you're feeling stuck about something, don't just ask GenAI for advice. Ask it to challenge you on why you are not following through. Ask it to coach you, to push you, to not give you the easy exit. Tell it that you really want to understand and change. You might just end up realizing what is really getting in your way.

LEARN TO LEAD

Resources I created or came across that I found valuable.

How to Win a Negotiation

As I was preparing for my session last week on Negotiation, I went back to brush up some of the gems Chris Voss shared in his must-read book "Never Split The Difference". If you don't have time to read the whole book, you can start with watching this short 7-minute video with some of his best tips and tricks.

Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely

This was one of the first books that got me interested in leadership and behavioral economics and it came up in this week's negotiation session. Although there has been controversy around some of the author's work, I believe the main message that humans are predictably irrational still holds, 17 years after publishing. He has done several TED talks, of which this one in 2008 is a good one to start with.

ON THE HORIZON

A sneak peek of ideas, projects and launches I'm working on before they go public.

Affiliated Facilitators

I'm taking the first steps to develop a network of affiliated facilitators that can come in and help me deliver workshops and training programs in local languages. If you are (or you know) a facilitator residing in Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, China or Philippines, and you are proficient to deliver leadership programs in the local language, do reach out, I'd love to get to know you.

Custom GPTs and AI Agents for Leaders

Last year I raised over 20,000 USD to fund my caregiver's kidney transplant by conducting masterclasses in how to use GenAI as a thought partner. Soon I'll be launching a second initiative to raise another 10,000 USD for her remaining medical costs. This time around we'll be focusing on the more recent introductions of AI Agents as well as how to best use Custom GPTs to your advantage as a leader. Let me know if you have any special requests, as I'm still designing the masterclasses.

In The Lead Podcast

I'm preparing a podcast with CEOs and executives who are 'in the lead'. We will be talking about what it is like to sit in their chair, especially in a rapidly changing business environment. First guest confirmations are in and I hope to soon be recording Season 1. Let me know if you have any suggestions for guests I should be considering or topics you like me to discuss with them.

Online Learning Offerings

I've used the first few weeks of this year to experiment on how to build out an online learning offering. Now I'm taking time to take the insights from these experiments and go back to the drawing board to put together online learning programs. I'm planning to kick this off in April and May, so stay tuned! If you have any requests for topics, do let me know.
